You probably need to activate the change. It seems you are confused with the definition of structure. The structure does not contain any data. They just type definition.If you want to return or receive a structure as a parameter, that can be done using RFC.
Single query would always be better than the multiple queries. The number of rows does not impact much on performance. It is the way query is written and the data to be fetched which makes the difference. Also, the table should be indexed.
