What are the differences between HDMI and VGA?

Let us learn the concepts of Video Graphics Array (VGA) and High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI)

Video Graphics Array (VGA)

VGA stands for Video Graphics Array. It was first developed by IBM and is widely used for video cards, TVs, Computer monitors and Laptops.

It has video signals RGBHV, which are as follows −

  • Red
  • Green
  • Blue
  • Horizontal synchronous
  • Vertical synchronous.

The picture quality degrades from digital to Analog conversion and back due to the Analog signal being susceptible to noise.

It has 15 pins but is not hot pluggable.

The conversions are as follows −

  • VGA to DVI
  • VGA to HDMI

It needs a separate Audio cable.

High Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMI)

It stands as High Definition Multimedia Interface. It is created by a group of electronics manufacturers including Sony, Toshiba.

All TVs and most computer monitors have HDMI. It’s easy to use, the cables are cheap and best of all. It has 19 or 29 pins. It is connected externally and hot pluggable. It is compatible with DVI and VGA with converters.

The Audio Signals includes the following −

  • LPCM
  • MPCM
  • DSD, DST
  • DTs-HD High Resolution Audio
  • DTs-HD Master Audio.
