Correct Answer(a) transport of water.

Xylem is the specialized tissue of vascular plants that transports water and nutrients from the plant-soil interface to stems and leaves and provides mechanical support and storage.

All the components of the xylem except the xylem parenchyma are dead, hence the xylem is non-living tissue. For this, the xylem elements need to form a narrow tube-like structure, so that water can rise in the tube through capillary action.

The xylem is of two types on the basis of origin, primary xylem, and secondary xylem.

Primary xylem: The initially formed primary xylem is known as protoxylem, while the newly formed primary xylem is known as metaxylem.
The two types of arrangement of primary xylem are endarch and exarch.
Endarch- This type of arrangement is present in the stem where the protoxylem is towards the pith and the metaxylem is towards the periphery.
Exarch- This type of xylem arrangement is present in the roots with a metaxylem in the center and a protoxylem towards the periphery.
Secondary xylem: These xylems are formed due to the vascular cambium and help in increasing the girth of the plant. The cells growing towards the pith form the secondary xylem. The secondary xylem formed during spring and autumn form an annual ring.
