Born in 1951, he completed his education form Bodoin College and Juris Doctorate from Harvard Law School in 1976. He joined American Express in 1981 and soon was progressed into leadership roles by 1993. His rise to the top position continued and by 2001 he became the CEO of American Express. He was among only three other African Americans to lead a Fortune 500 firm.

By the end of the decade around 2018, he retired from his position of Chairman and CEO of the American Express and joined a venture capital firm, General Capitalist. He also enjoys directorial positions on several other top companies like Airbnb, and Berkshire Hathway.

After the financial crisis in 2008, American Express also faced a tough challenge as the international economy collapsed dramatically. During this period the bank showed tremendous leadership and was accepted by Federeal Reserve System as a bank holding company. It then obtained emergency funding quickly and saved itself from financial loss.

Chenault has been instrumental in increasing the membership base of the company dramatically through credit card membership reward programs that still continues to be a major feature of this and all other companies.

Apart from financial growth for company, he will be remembered for increasing the diverse workforce and always being a supporter of diversity. Being an African American to lead a fortune 500 company, he always encouraged other organizations to hire diverse workforce with people from various backgrounds and culture.
