How to get selected Index of the Radio group in Android?


This example demonstrates how do I get selected index of the radio group in android.

Step 1 − Create a new project in Android Studio, go to File ⇒ New Project and fill all required details to create a new project.

Step 2 − Add the following code to res/layout/activity_main.xml.

   <RadioGroup
      android:id="@+id/radioGroup"

      android:layout_height="wrap_content"
      android:orientation="vertical"
      android:layout_below="@id/textView"
      android:padding="15dp">
   <RadioButton
      android:id="@+id/rbNetflix"
      android:layout_width="match_parent"

      android:id="@+id/rbAmazonPrime"

Step 3 − Add the following code to src/MainActivity.java

   protected void onCreate(Bundle savedInstanceState) {
      super.onCreate(savedInstanceState);
      setContentView(R.layout.activity_main);
      textView = findViewById(R.id.textView);
      button = findViewById(R.id.btnGetItem);
      radioGroup = findViewById(R.id.radioGroup);
      button.setOnClickListener(new View.OnClickListener() {
         @Override
         public void onClick(View v) {
            int selectedRadioButtonId = radioGroup.getCheckedRadioButtonId();
            if (selectedRadioButtonId != -1) {
               selectedRadioButton = findViewById(selectedRadioButtonId);
               String selectedRbText = selectedRadioButton.getText().toString();
               textView.setText(selectedRbText + " is Selected");
            } else {
               textView.setText("Nothing selected from the radio group");
            }

      });

}

Step 4 - Add the following code to androidManifest.xml

Let's try to run your application. I assume you have connected your actual Android Mobile device with your computer. To run the app from android studio, open one of your project's activity files and click Run Play Icon icon from the toolbar.
