The same number of chromosomes are maintained in offsprings and parents of organisms during reproduction due to the reductional type of division.

During gamete formation, the reduction division known as meiosis reduces the number of chromosomes into half number in male and female gametes.

During the process of fertilization, male (X) and female (X) gametes fuse with the original number of chromosomes to restore the same number of chromosomes as in parents (2X).
