What type of oxides are formed when non-metals combine with oxygen?

AcademicChemistryNCERTClass 10

Non-metals react with oxygen to form non-metalic oxides. These are acidic and neutral oxides.
Example: When carbon reacts with oxygen it forms carbon dioxide, which is an acidic oxide, and water is formed when hydrogen reacts with oxygen, which is neutral.

Sulphur reacts with oxygen to form non-metal oxide ( Sulphur dioxide).

                         Sulphur (S) + Oxygen (O2)       ----->      Sulphur dioxide (SO2)

This Sulphur dioxide is acidic In nature which can turn blue litmus paper red.

[Extra information:

Uses of Nonmetals are as follows:
1. Oxygen as gas is very essential to humans. Apart from breathing, it is also used for medical purposes and for combustion.
2. Sulphur is used due to its medical properties and as an important ingredient in chemical solutions. Sulphuric acid is used extensively in industry, in batteries and in manufacturing.
3. Chlorine is a powerful disinfectant used to purify water for drinking and fill swimming pools.]
