What is the role of the epidermis in plants?

AcademicBiologyNCERTClass 9

The epidermis forms a continuous sheet on both the external and internal surfaces of the human body and its organs. Hence, it is known as the covering tissue or protective tissue, while the continuous sheet is known as the epithelium.

Apart from protecting the organs, the epithelial tissue also acts as a barrier to separate the internal organs and regulates the entry and exit of materials into and out of the body.

Role of the epidermis in plants:

  • Cells of the epidermis form a continuous layer without intercellular spaces.
  • It protects all the parts of plants.
  • A plant's leaves, roots, stems, flowers, fruit, and seeds are all covered by a single layer of cells forming the epidermis.
  • Epidermis creates a barrier against things like mechanical damage, water loss, and infection.
