VSAM Online Training Overview

VSAM stands for Virtual Storage Access Method. It is a file storage access method used in MVS, ZOS, and OS/390 operating systems. VSAM is a high-performance access method used to organize data in the form of files in Mainframes. 

VSAM is used by COBOL and CICS in Mainframes to store and retrieve data. VSAM makes it easier for application programs to execute an input-output operation. The course curriculum includes but is not limited to the following topics:

• VSAM architecture: VSAM is a hierarchical file system that organizes data into data sets, which are further divided into members. VSAM uses a catalog to store information about data sets and members.

• VSAM file types: VSAM supports four types of files: keyed-sequenced data sets (KSDS), entry-sequenced data sets (ESDS), relative record data sets (RRDS), and linear data sets (LDS).

• VSAM access methods: VSAM provides three access methods: sequential access, key-sequenced access, and direct access.

• VSAM programming: VSAM can be programmed using COBOL, PL/I, Assembler, and C. VSAM provides a set of macros and subroutines that can be used to perform various operations on VSAM files.

• VSAM performance tuning: There are a number of things that can be done to improve the performance of VSAM applications, such as choosing the correct file type and access method, using indexes, and optimizing buffer pools.
