Use number line and add the following integers :
(a) $ 9+(-6) $
(b) $5 + (– 11)$
(c) $(– 1) + (– 7)$
(d) $(– 5) + 10$
(e) $(– 1) + (– 2) + (– 3)$
(f) $(– 2) + 8 + (– 4)$
To do:
We have to add the given numbers using the number line.
Solution:
(a) \( 9+(-6) \)
Step 1: Mark 9
Step 2: Move 6 places to the left from 9 as we have to add $-6$ to 9.
(b) \( 5+(-11) \)
Step 1: Mark 5
Step 2: Move 11 places to the left from 5 as we have to add $-11$ to 5.
(c) $(– 1) + (– 7)$
Step 1: Mark $-1$
Step 2: Move 7 places to the left from $-1$ as we have to add $-7$ to $-1$.
(d) $(– 5) + 10$
Step 1: Mark $-5$
Step 2: Move 10 places to the right from $-5$ as we have to add $10$ to $-5$.
(e) $(– 1) + (– 2) + (– 3)$
Step 1: Mark $-1$
Step 2: Move 2 places to the left and then 3 places to the left from $-1$ as we have to add $-2$ and then $-3$ to $-1$.
(f) $(– 2) + 8 + (– 4)$
Step 1: Mark $-2$
Step 2: Move 8 places to the right from $-2$ and then 4 places to the left from the resulting value as we have to add $8$ to $-2$ and then $-4$ to the resulting value.
