Course Description

Leadership of organisations spend much of their time analysing market trends, customer behaviour and what their competitors are doing. This makes a lot of sense for businesses seeking competitive advantage. However, in seeking competitive advantage very little time is spent on the greatest source of competitive advantage, namely the organisation’s people or workforce. In a vague, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous (VUCA) world of business, strategic workforce management is the greatest differentiating factor between a highly successful and mediocre organisation.

This course on Strategic Workforce Management looks at how to align your people strategy with the business strategy. An organisations competitive advantage is its people and in order to add maximum value for the organisation, these people must be optimally distributed throughout the company.

In this course we will get into the following key areas:

  • The vision & strategy
  • The strategic roadmap
  • The aligning & cascading or organisational objectives
  • The capability gap analysis
  • The human capital strategy
  • Integrated performance management
  • Monitoring, evaluating, and adjusting

The exercises for this course are on the 7 Key Elements of SWM and are designed to practically apply the principles discussed.

The first exercise is A SWOT Analysis exercise. Use this exercise to get a clear picture of your organisation and what you have to work with. The second exercise is a GAP Analysis; this exercise will assist you in identifying where your organisation is currently, where it needs to go, and the actions plans to close that gap.

The third exercise is Understanding Your Current Workforce. The purpose of this exercise is to help you to understand the composition of your current workforce.

The 4th exercise is where I would like you to plot your employees on a 9 Block Matrix. The 5th exercise is Anticipating your Future Workforce, the purpose of this exercise is to help you to identify the capabilities you need for the future. The 6th and final exercise is the Capability Gap Analysis,  a set of questions designed to help you think about the gap between your current capability and your desired capability.
