Ritu ate $\frac{3}{5}$ part of an apple and the remaining apple was eaten by her brother Somu. How much part of the apple did Somu eat? Who had the larger share? By how much?

Given:

Ritu ate $ \frac{3}{5}$ part of an apple and the remaining apple was eaten by her brother Somu.

To do:

We have to find the part of apple that Somu ate, the person having the larger share and by how much.

Solution :

Part of the apple eaten by Ritu $= \frac{3}{5}$

Part eaten by Somu $=1 -$ part of apple eaten by Ritu

$=1 - \frac{3}{5}$

$=\frac{1\times5-3}{5}$

$=\frac{5-3}{5}$

$= \frac{2}{5}$

Here,

$ \frac{3}{5}> \frac{2}{5}$

This implies,

Ritu had the larger share.

Ritu had the larger share by,

$\frac{3}{5}  - \frac{2}{5} =\frac{1}{5}$ parts

Therefore,

Ritu had a larger share than Somu by $\frac{1}{5}$ part.
