Refractive index of diamond with respect to glass is 1.6 and absolute refractive index of glass is 1.5. Find out the absolute refractive index of diamond.

Given: Absolute refractive index of glass$=\frac{refrective\ index\ of\ a\ glass}{refrective\ index\ of\ air}=\frac{\mu_{glass}}{\mu_{air}}=1.5$

Refractive index of diamond with respect to glass $=\frac{\mu_{diamond}}{\mu_{glass}}=1.6$

So, $\mu_{diamond}=\mu_{glass}\times 1.6$

$=1.5\times 1.6$         [$\because\ \mu_{glass}=1.5$]

$=2.4$

The absolute refractive index of diamond $\mu_{diamond}=2.4$
