Why plants need water?
Plants need water
1. To germinate-
Germination is the process in which a seed develops into a seedling. During this process, water is taken up by the seeds to cause swelling. Water hydrates and activates the enzymes required for germination to occur.
2. To carry out photosynthesis-
Water along with carbon dioxide and sunlight produces carbohydrates. These sugars are utilized by the plants for their growth.
3. To absorb minerals from the soil-
Roots take up water along with the nutrients and minerals present in the soil. Water helps in transporting these absorbed nutrients throughout the plant body.
4. To maintain the upright position of the plant-
Transpiration is the process by which water moves up the stem of a plant from root to leaf. Water is lost from the plant due to evaporation occurring at the leaves. This continual flow of water and nutrients help in maintaining the plant cell structure, and keeps them firm. In the absence of water, the plant gradually wilts and dies.
