Why is respiration considered an exothermic reaction? Explain.

Exothermic reaction: "Exo" means releases and "thermic" means heat. therefore, an exothermic reaction is a chemical reaction that releases energy through light or heat
It is expressed in a chemical equation:
Reactants → products + heat energy.
Example of exothermic reaction: when carbon is burned in presence of oxygen, a lot of heat is released in this process.

$C\ ( s) \ +\ O_{2} \ ( g)\rightarrow \ CO_{2}( g) \ +\ Heat$

Now, during respiration, glucose undergoes slow combustion by combining with oxygen to form carbon dioxide, water, and energy. The primary function of this energy is to maintain our body heat.

The equation for respiration is given below:

$C_{6} H_{12} O_{6} \ ( aq) \ +\ 6O_2\ ( g) \ \rightarrow \ 6CO_{2} \ ( g) \ +\ 6H_{2} O\ ( l) \ +\ Energy$

Due to the production of energy, respiration is considered an exothermic process.
