Why is it advisable to use iodized salt?

Iodine is necessary for the formation of thyroxine hormone produced by the Thyroid Gland. A deficiency of iodine in the diet can cause a deficiency of thyroxine hormone in the body.

Without adequate iodine, the thyroid gland progressively enlarges and develops a goiter as it tries to keep up with the demand for thyroid hormone production. Worldwide, iodine deficiency is the most common cause of thyroid enlargement and goiter.

Therefore, it is advisable to use iodized salt in food.
