Why is biogas considered an ideal fuel for domestic use?
Biogas is considered an ideal fuel for domestic use because of the following reasons:
1. It has a high calorific value, i.e it produces a large amount of heat per unit mass.
2. It burns without smoke and hence does not cause air pollution.
3. It is a clean fuel as it burns completely without leaving behind any residue.
4. It is cheaper than most common fuels.
Explanation
Biogas is the mixture of gases produced by the anaerobic bacterial decomposition (decomposition without oxygen) of organic matters. It comprises primarily methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2) and a trace amount of hydrogen sulphide (H2S), ammonia (NH3), oxygen and nitrogen.
It is a clean and renewable energy source, which can be produced from raw materials such as agricultural waste, manure, municipal waste, plant material, sewage, green waste or food waste.
