Why is nitrogen considered an essential element? How do plants acquire nitrogen?
Nitrogen is an essential element used in the synthesis of proteins and DNA and other compounds like chlorophyll, the compound used by plants to trap sunlight during the process of Photosynthesis.
Nitrogen is taken up in the form of inorganic nitrates or nitrites or as organic compounds prepared by Bacteria from atmospheric Nitrogen.
Plants cannot take in Nitrogen directly from the air. They acquire nitrogen with the help of a bacterium known as Rhizobium. This bacteria can convert nitrogen into a soluble form. This conversion of nitrogen into the usable form is called Nitrogen Fixation.
