Why does HCL gas show its acidic nature only when it dissolves in water?

HCl gas when dissolved in water forms hydrochloric acid, hence it gives the acidic nature. Below are a few points about hydrochloric Acid

  • Hydrochloric acid is formed by the combination of hydrogen chloride gas with water.

  • When hydrogen chloride gas dissolves in water to produce hydrochloric acid, the hydrogen chloride molecule gives a proton (a hydrogen ion) to a water molecule.

  • It is a strong acid.

  • It dissociates completely to give H+ ions and Cl- ions.

  • Its chemical formula is HCL.

  • It is used in manufacturing Aquaragia which contain 3 parts of Hydrochloric Acid(HCL) and one part of Nitric Acid. It is also used to dissolve noble metals like gold and platinum.
