Why do we need two muscles to move a bone?

We need two muscles to move a bone because a single muscle can only pull the bone, it cannot push them back to the original position. Hence, two muscles have to work together to move a bone.

Muscles usually work in pairs of flexors and extensors. The flexor contracts to bend a limb at a joint, and when the movement gets completed, then the flexor relaxes and the extensor contracts to extend or straighten the limb at the same joint.

In simple terms, muscles move body parts by contracting and relaxing and are attached by the means of tendons.

For example- the biceps muscle that is present in the front of the upper arm is a flexor, and the triceps muscle that is present at the back of the upper arm is an extensor.

When we bend our elbow, the biceps contracts, after that when we straighten the elbow, then the biceps relaxes and the triceps contracts.
