Why do we need to put similar kinds of food together?

Placing the similar kinds of food together provide the information on the same type of nutrient present in that food group.

  • Foods are broadly grouped into five major groups – (i) vegetables and legumes, (ii) fruits, (iii) cereals and grains, (iv) meat and meat products, (v) milk and milk products.
  • When dairy products like is milk, curd, cheese, yoghurt are grouped together, it indicates their common source (as animal product) and present nutrients (calcium and protein) in them.
  • Similarly, chief nutrient in meat products and cereals are proteins and carbohydrates.

For maintaining proper health and nutrition, it is beneficial to eat a well-balanced diet including at least minimum one food item from each group.
