Why do we need to separate different components of a mixture? Give two examples.

Mixtures consist of two or more different kinds of particles or two or more pure substances mixed together, but these are not chemically bound. Example: Sugar solution is a mixture because it can be separated into its constituents by physical processes (like evaporation). It shows the properties of both sugar and water.

Among the different components of a mixture, there are many substances that can be unwanted, harmful, or not useful to us. To remove these unwanted, harmful, or unuseful components, we need to separate them.

For example:
  •  Tea leaves are separated from the liquid with a strainer while preparing tea.

  • Stone pieces from wheat, rice, or pulses are picked out by hand.

[Extra information: Different methods can be used to separate the components of a mixture. These methods are based on the properties of the components of the mixture. For example, in order to remove a ferromagnetic substance, the magnetic separation method can be used.]
