Why do some people need to use a dialysis machine ? What does the machine do ?

Kidneys help in the excretion of major waste products like ammonia and urea from the body. In case of kidney failure, the wastes are not excreted out of the body, can be harmful. Therefore the blood is filtered outside the body with the help of a dialysis machine.

 During dialysis, the blood is purified externally. The dialysis machine acts as an artificial kidney. The impure blood is taken out of the body into the dialysis machine where it is purified and the pure blood is sent back to the body. The blood is purified inside the machine and wastes are removed. The process should be done periodically, depending on the condition of the patient.
