Why acids are bitter in taste?

Acids are generally sour in taste and bases are generally bitter in taste.

An acid produces hydrogen ions in solution because it reacts with the water molecules by giving a proton to them. Acids generally taste sour due to the presence of this H+ ion, but they may have other tastes depending on the other parts of the molecule.

Example- When hydrogen chloride gas dissolves in water to produce hydrochloric acid, the hydrogen chloride molecule gives a proton (a hydrogen ion) to a water molecule.
