Which gas Is Produced By The Reaction Of Metal With Acid?

Dear Shambhavi,

When acids react with metals, they produce a salt and hydrogen gas. Most metals react with acids, but not all. The general equation that describes the chemical reaction between an acid and metal is metal + acid = salt + hydrogen gas.

Example: nitric acid + calcium → calcium nitrate + hydrogen

Examples of metals that do not react with acids include copper, platinum and mercury. The reactivity series of metals can be used to predict which metals will react with acids.
