Where is decantation used? Give two examples.
Decantation is used to separate a mixture of liquid from solid or two immiscible (non-mixing) liquids.
- Rainwater is a mixture of mud and water. It is purified by decantation.
- Oil and water can be separated by decantation because oil floats up. The flask can be tilted and oil is poured out of the mixture until just water remains in the flask.
