What types of joints are present in our fingers?

Hinge joints are a type of joint that functions much like the hinge on a door, allowing bones to move in one direction back and forth with limited motion along other planes. The fingers, toes, elbows, knees, and ankles contain hinge joints.

Joints are cartilage surfaces that connect bones to each other. This cartilage allows our bones to glide smoothly against one another, allowing us painless movement. There are four joints in each finger, totalling 20 joints in each hand!

Each of the fingers has three joints:

metacarpophalangeal joint (MCP) – the joint at the base of the finger.

proximal interphalangeal joint (PIP) – the joint in the middle of the finger.

distal interphalangeal joint (DIP) – the joint closest to the fingertip.
