What should be subtracted from 7/24 to get -1/12?

Given: $\frac{7}{24}$

To find: What number should be subtracted from $\frac{7}{24}$ to get $\frac{-1}{12}$

Solution:

Let the number to be subtracted = a

Therefore,

$\frac{7}{24} \ -\ a\ =\ \frac{-1}{12}$

$\Longrightarrow \ \frac{7}{24} \ +\ \ \frac{1}{12} \ =\ a$

$\Longrightarrow \ a\ =\ \frac{7}{24} \ +\ \ \frac{2}{24} \ =\ \frac{9}{24}$

$\Longrightarrow \ a=\ \frac{9}{24} \ =\ \frac{3}{8}$
