What should be added to $\frac{-7}{8}$ so as to get $\frac{5}{9}$?

Given :

The given numbers are $\frac{-7}{8}$ and $\frac{5}{9}$.

To do :

We have to find the number that should be added to $\frac{-7}{8}$ to get $\frac{5}{9}$.

Solution :

Let the number to be added to $\frac{-7}{8}$ to get $\frac{5}{9}$ be $x$.

This implies,

$\frac{-7}{8}+x=\frac{5}{9}$

$x =\frac{5}{9} - (\frac{-7}{8})$

$x =\frac{5}{9} + \frac{7}{8}$

$x = \frac{[5(8)+7(9)]}{72}$

$x = \frac{(40+63)}{72}$

$x = \frac{103}{72}$.

The number to be added to $\frac{-7}{8}$ to get $\frac{5}{9}$ is $\frac{103}{72}$.
