What is tuber of a plant?

The term Tuber is originated from the Latin word "tuber", meaning lump, bump, or swelling.

A tuber is the enlarged and thickened part of an underground stem of a plant, which acts as a storage organ for food (starch).

These nutrients are used by the plants for surviving the winter or dry months, regrowing during the next growing season, and as a means of asexual reproduction.

Tubers produce nodes, buds, or eyes all over their surface, which grow up through the soil surface as shoots and stems.

Because of the high nutrient content, many tubers, such as potatoes, cassava, yam are grown as food.
