What is the outcome of error during DNA replication?

The variations or errors occurred during the DNA replication gives rise to mutation. These mutations or variations can be proved to be useful, neutral or harmful based on the gene in which mutation occurred.

For example, if there are few species of bacteria that are surviving in suitable water at room temperature. Due to any reason such as climate change, if the temperature of the water increased, the bacterial species can die and becomes extinct. But this does not occur in nature, as there are few mutated or varied species that are formed due to mutation will be capable of surviving in high-temperature water.
