What is the multiplication of integers?
Multiplication of Integers:
Integers can be either positive or negative, with the only exception of 0, which is neither positive nor negative.
- Positive integers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, etc.
- Negative integers: –1, –2, –3, –4, etc.
A negative integer can be represented as a positive integer multiplied by –1. For example,
- –5 = 5 × (–1)
Multiplication:
Multiplication is a repetitive addition. For example,
- 3 x 2 = 2 + 2 + 2 = 6
Multiplication of any two integers of opposite sign always results in a negative integer.
Example: Find the product of 3 × (–5).
Answer:
Multiplication is nothing but repetitive addition.
- 3 × (–5) = (–5) + (–5) + (–5) = –15
The result (–15) is a negative integer.
