What is the meaning of semi-permeable membrane?

A semipermeable membrane is a type of biological or synthetic polymeric membrane that is permeable to only certain molecules and not to all molecules which means that it allows certain molecules or ions to pass through it by diffusion.

It can be both biological and artificial.

1. Artificial semipermeable membranes include a variety of material designed for the purposes of filtration, such as those used in reverse osmosis, which only allows water to pass excluding salt ions. Another example is the dialysis tubing.

2. Biological semipermeable membranes include the cell membranes of all organisms that behave like a simple semipermeable membrane, allowing water to pass while excluding solutes.
