Solution :

The greatest 4 digit number formed using the digits 4, 6, 9, 8 each only once is $9864$.

The smallest 4 digit number formed using the digits 4, 6, 9, 8 each only once is $4689$.

The difference between the greatest and the least 4 digit numbers formed using the digits 4, 6, 9, 8 each only once $= 9864-4689 =5175 $.
