What is the Atomic Number?

The atomic number or proton number of any element is the number of protons present in the nucleus of every atom of that element. It is denoted by symbol Z.

The atomic number can identify a chemical element as it is unique to the charge number of the nucleus.

For example, in a helium atom, there are 2 electrons and 2 protons.

Thus, the atomic number of He atom = number of electrons = number of protons = 2.
