What is sludge? Explain how it is treated.

Sludge is the collected semi-solid waste from the wastewater during the treatment in the water treatment plant.

The settled solids that are removed in wastewater treatment with a scraper are known as sludge.   Sludge is decomposed in a separate tank by anaerobic bacteria. This is then, transferred to a tank where it is decomposed by anaerobic bacteria to produce biogas.

Dried or activated sludge is used as manure instead of taking up space in a landfill or other disposal facility to improve and maintain productive soils and stimulate plant growth because it has nutrient-rich organic materials. If this is poured into the drain along with other contaminants, it will most likely block the drains.

[Extra information: Biogas is used as a low-cost fuel for heating, cooking, etc. It can also be used to produce electricity. Sludge if not treated properly can lead to the clogging of  drains.]
