What Is Rhizobium?

Rhizobium is a soil bacterium that can fix atmospheric nitrogen within the root nodules of leguminous plants.

Rhizobium lives in a symbiotic association with leguminous plants. The bacteria cannot fix nitrogen alone.

The plant acts as a host and provides sugar to the Rhizobium.

The Rhizobium enters into the plant roots through root hair which causes infection in roots and formation of nodules.

The Rhizobium takes the atmospheric nitrogen and turns it into ammonia (NH3), which acts as a natural fertilizer for plants.
