What is observed when a solution of sodium sulphate is added to a solution of barium chloride taken in a test tube? Write equation for the chemical reaction involved and name the type of reaction in this case.

When the barium chloride solution is added to the sodium sulphate solution, a white precipitate of barium sulphate is formed along with the sodium chloride solution.
The balanced chemical equation for the reaction is given below:
$BaCl_{2}( aq) \ +\ Na_{2} SO_{4}( aq) \ \rightarrow BaSO_{4}( s) \ +\ 2NaCl( aq)$

This is known as a double displacement reaction. As precipitate is formed at the end of the reaction, hence it is also known as a precipitation reaction.
