What is measurement?
Measurement means the comparison of an unknown quantity with some known quantity. This known fixed quantity is called a unit of measurement.
For the sake of uniformity, we need a common set of units of measurement, which are called standard units. Nowadays SI units are used in science and technology almost universally.
Measurement is a comparison of an unknown quantity with a known fixed quantity of the same kind. The value obtained on measuring a quantity is called its magnitude. The magnitude of a quantity is expressed as numbers in its unit. A unit is a fixed quantity (as of length, time, or value) used as a standard of measurement. An inch is a unit of length.
Standard units are used in measurement because other units such as hand spans are not appropriate because each person has a different height.
