What is Loading?
The process of adding a chemical to an impure liquid in order to speed up the process of sedimentation is called loading.
Alum is the commonly-used chemical which helps in loading.
Alum increases the rate of sedimentation because alum acts as an external agent and causes the particles present in solution to become heavier as alum's chemical reacts with them and made them heavier than before. As heavier particles sink in water these particles settle down, therefore, increasing the speed of sedimentation.
