What is LCM?

Least Common multiple :

  • The least common multiple of two or more numbers is the smallest non-zero common number which is a multiple of all the given numbers.
  • The LCM of two or more numbers is the product of the prime factors counted the maximum number of times they occur in any of the numbers.

For example,

LCM of 4, 6, and 8 is,

Prime factorizations of 4, 6, and 8 are

$4 = 2 \times 2$

$6 =3 \times 2$

$8 = 2 \times 2 \times 2$

2 occurs the maximum number of times in factorization of 8 and 3 occurs the maximum number of times in factorization of 6.

Therefore,

The LCM of 4, 6 and 8 is $2\times 2\times 2\times 3=8\times 3=24$.
