What is gas? Explain.

The matter is anything that has mass and takes up space. Everything around us is a matter like Food, Water, and Cloth, including air.

Following are the three basic states of Matter:

• Solid

• Liquid

• Gas

• Plasma

Gas is one of the four fundamental states of matter. A gas may be made up of individual atoms, elemental molecules made from one type of atom, or compound molecules made from a variety of atoms. A gas mixture contains a variety of pure gases for example air.

For example - air, oxygen, hydrogen, nitrogen, carbon dioxide, etc are all gases.

Gases have three characteristic properties:

(1) Gases are easy to compress

(2) Gases expand to fill their containers

(3) Gases occupy far more space than the liquids or solids from which they form.

Example: An internal combustion engine has gas easily compressed inside it.
