What is friction and why we want friction ?

Friction

Friction is an opposing force that exists between two surfaces which are in contact. It helps us a lot in doing many activities.

There are 4 types of friction.

1) Static friction

This friction occurs when two or more solid objects rest on the ground, and not moving relative to each other.

This friction prevents an object from sliding down a sloped surface.

For example, A vehicle parked on a hill, A book on a table.

2) Sliding friction

This friction occurs when a body slides on the ground.

For example, while writing with a pencil the pencil lead slides on the paper. The friction between lead and the paper is good enough to leave a watermark on the paper.

3) Rolling friction

This type of friction occurs between rolling objects and the ground.

For example, the friction between the tires and the ground, etc.

4) Fluid friction

It is a friction that occurs when objects move across or through a fluid.

For example, while swimming, the friction of water helps the swimmer to swim.

If there is no friction, we would slide on the ground. The friction present in the atmosphere helps in vapourising the minute particles that come from the space. Therefore, there is a lot of importance of friction in our daily life.
