What is fabric, yarn and fibre?

1. Fabric means a woven material, a textile or other material resembling woven cloth. Fabric is made up of yarns.

Fabrics are made by the two main processes known as weaving and knitting.

Use of Fabric:  Fabric is mostly used for clothing and for containers such as bags and baskets. In the household, they are used in carpeting, upholstered furnishings, window shades, towels, coverings for tables, beds, and other flat surfaces, and in art.

2. Yarns are made up of thin strands called fibres. The process of making yarn from fibres is called spinning. In this process, a mass of cotton wool is drawn out and twisted.

3.  Fibres are used to make yarn; which in turn used to make fabric. Fibres are thread-like structures that are long, thin and flexible. These may be spun into yarns and then made into fabrics. There can be different types of fibres.

On the basis of their origin, fibres are classified as natural fibres and synthetic fibres.

a. Natural fibres- Natural fibres are the fibres that are obtained from plants, animals or mineral sources. Some of the examples are cotton, silk, wool, etc.

Natural fibres can again be divided into two types-

i) Plant fibres- plant fibres are fibres that are derived from plants. Eg. Cotton and Jute.

ii) Animal fibres- Animal fibres are fibres derived from animals. Eg.silk and wool.

b. Synthetic fibres- synthetic fibres are man-made fibres designed to make fabrics. Eg. nylon and rayon.
