What is epidermis?

The epidermis is the outermost layer of plants and animal cells. Its main purpose is to protect.

In animals, it is the outermost of the three layers that make up the skin in animals, the other two inner layers are the dermis and hypodermis.

It provides a protective barrier against the infection from environmental pathogens and also regulates the amount of water released from the body into the atmosphere through transepidermal water loss.

In plants, it is a single layer of cells that covers the leaves, roots, stems, flowers, fruit, and seed parts of a plant.

It provides a protective barrier against mechanical injury, water loss, and infection.
