What is diffraction?

Diffraction is the slight bending of light as it passes around the edge of an object.

For example when light passes though a small hole, it appears as if light is spreading from that hole in all directions. This is because, the small hole acts as a new source of light.

This happens prominently when the hole is comparable in size to the wavelength of light.
