It happens because the different colour of white light bend or are refracted towards the normal through different angles.

The various colours of the spectrum obtained on the screen in order are:

1. Violet,

2. Indigo,

3. Blue,

4. Green,

5. Yellow,

6. Orange, and

7. Red.
