What is sclerenchyma tissue?


Sclerenchyma is a type of plant tissue which is composed of dead cells. These cells are elongated and have thick walls containing lignin. The cellulose contain is high which helps to provide structural support to the plants.


Sclerenchyma cells possess two types of cell walls such as primary and secondary walls. Sclerenchyma is present in the covering of seeds and nuts. It is also present in the vascular tissues of stems and veins of leaves.
