What is EMF?

In electromagnetism, EMF $(denoted\ by\ the\ symbol\ \epsilon \ and\ \ measured\ in\ volts)$ is the abbreviation for Electromotive force.

It is the energy per unit electric charge that is imparted by an energy source, such as an electric generator or a battery. Devices known as transducers provide EMFs by converting other forms of energy into electrical energy, such as batteries (which converts chemical energy) or generators (which convert mechanical energy).

Energy is converted from one form to another (in the generator or battery) as the device does work on the electric charge being transferred within itself.
