What is air? Name the major constituents of air. Also give their volume proportions in air.

Air is a mixture of gases. These are colourless and odourless gases. It is made up of 78 % nitrogen, 21% oxygen, and 1 % other gases and water vapour. It also contains trace amounts of carbon dioxide, neon, helium, methane, krypton, hydrogen, nitrous oxide, xenon, ozone, iodine, carbon monoxide, water vapours, and ammonia.

The major constituents of air are nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide and argon.
The percentage composition of constituents of air are as given below:

The activities that are possible due to the presence of air are given below:
  1. To breathe for survival: Animals and plants use oxygen from air during respiration and release carbon dioxide gas in the air. But green plants also release oxygen gas by using carbon dioxide during photosynthesis.
  2. For the burning of a substance: Oxygen accounts for 21% of the atmosphere. The oxygen present in the air assists in burning. Oxygen is necessary for burning substances.
  3. For photosynthesis:  Photosynthesis is the process by which green plants use sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide from the air to make their own food.

Carbon Dioxide   +   Water   +   Sunlight   →      Glucose       +        Oxygen
